What should we change in
the Hungarian education system?
Hungarian education system has its
benefits, however, as everything it also has some disadvantages. Students have
so many lessons that they cannot learn languages, do sport, do free-time
activities or have social life.
Learning languages
has become so important nowadays. On most of the job interviews the first
question is how many languages the candidate speaks. In some cases, English is
not enough. Sometimes the employers expect three or more languages that the
employee can speak fluently. Secondary schools ensure language courses, but these
are not effective enough. After graduation most of the students are not able to
use the language they learnt in secondary school but they do not have enough
free time to learn languages by themselves or by the help of a tutor.
Doing sport is also
very important especially for the youngers. In Hungary students have PE lessons
every day. However, the students do not support this. Their problem is that
these PE lessons are very old-fashioned, and in most cases, jogging is the only
option that one can do in a class. There should be more possibilities for the
students as every people have different abilities, so they should try different
sports. Unfortunately, most students are not capable to do sport in their free
time, because their timetable is full.
Students in
elementary schools should try as many activities and hobbies as they can, for
example painting, singing or acting. This opportunity is not ensured in the
Hungarian education system. On the other hand, they could do this only after
their classes, and according to the laws elementary students have to stay until
4 p.m. at school. In other words, they are too tired
to have some hobbies or even to meet with their friends improving their social
and communicating skills or read a book they prefer to improve their
comprehensive skills. Our education system should give a lot more freedom to the
students to do what they are interested in and to improve themselves
effectively this way.
In conclusion, the
students’ days are very well pre-planned; it does not really give them any
spare time to spend because after school, when they go home, they still have to
study more. This way it cannot be expected from them to learn several
languages, do sports, and try out some hobbies. The time they spend in school
should be equal to the time they spend at home and with their friends. This could
be a balanced life.
