What I have learned so far in university
In my opinion, the first semester was about brushing up our knowledge and skills about the English language. We got reacquainted with the grammar rules and the tenses. We were taught about morphology, phonetics and phonology again, but this time not just in Hungarian, but English, too. The latter was a new experience for many of us, as in former English lessons we only learned basic grammar and new words and expressions. We relearned the importance of linking words, how to write a paragraph, and what topic sentences are. We learned many idioms and expressions, although if one reads many English works, some of them were familiar. Idioms are important to know as native speakers use them in everyday life, almost without noticing, and foreigners can get quite confused if they hear them without knowing about them. Even though we learned many facts about literature, in English we just started an introductory lesson about it in order to get to know the known expressions and to broaden our knowledge. In Hungarian classes we learned about the same topics, but with greater care for the history of Hungarian literature. In conclusion, the previous semester in the university was a great opportunity to acquire the basic skills necessary for our further years, as the material is extensive and we need these elementary skills to become good teachers.
