Why should be Cigarettes banned? -
The Jungle Book
Being very
widespread around the world, smoking affects a lot of people. It is very
harmful to consumers’ health and it brings forth other problems as well.
Therefore, there is an endless list of uncountable reasons of why smoking
should be banned.
First of
all, smoking is highly addictive - comparable to heroin and cocaine. It means that it is
almost impossible to give it up.
Secondly, it
is awful for your body. There are several harmful effects of smoking ranging
from serious diseases to even death. In the European Union, diseases
attributable to smoking account for approximately 15 percent of all deaths. Tobacco
smoking has consistently been referred to “as the single most important
preventable cause of premature death”.
The most
common disease attributed to smoking is cancer (particularly of the lungs,
larynx, oral cavity, pharynx, oesophagus, pancreas, cervix, kidney and
bladder). Other disease that may occur are coronary artery disease;
cerebrovascular disease (strokes, intracerebellar haemorrhages); and COAD
(chronic obstructive airways disease, comprising chronic bronchitis and
emphysema). In addition, smoking produces an increased heart rate, raised blood
pleasure, and it is very adverse for your skin and teeth.
What is
more, smoking can damage the life of a foetus once you are pregnant. The
effects of tobacco smoke on the unborn child are now well catalogued. Many
studies have shown an association between cigarette smoking and the increased
incidence of babies having low birthweight, of spontaneous abortions, and of
stillbirths. Furthermore, certain complications of pregnancy are also
associated with smoking.
However, a
smoker parent can damage not just her/his unborn child but also her/his
children who are alive. According to a survey the children of smokers are three
times more likely to take up the habit than those of non-smokers. Moreover, in
circles of those children whose parents are smokers a higher risk of developing
lung problems, increased risk of heart attack and cerebrovascular diseases can
occur.
In
addition, smokers have an effect on other people too. Smoking is very harmful
in public places, and unfortunately smokers very rarely take non-smokers into
consideration.
Besides, there
are also financial reasons why it is not worth to smoke. Nowadays, tobacco is
very expensive, and in those families where there is more than one smoker, this
addiction costs a lot of money.
Thus, in
conclusion we can say that smoking has only disadvantages, and causes all kind
of problems that drugs (which are illegal) cause, hence it is undoubted that is
should be banned.
