If you could change just one thing about the Hungarian education system, what would it be and why?
To make education system better there need to be some changes not just in teachers’ studies and motivation but the educational program should be shortened in primary, secondary school and at university as well. As an undergraduate it is easier to say that teachers get tense sometimes. However, learning to be a teacher shows the bigger and whole picture.
Nowadays, there should be classes from the first year at university, on which the students deal with simulated conflicts and problematic situations. It is an everyday problem that teachers cannot handle or not correctly manage these cases. Therefore, they aggravate these situations. Those lectures, where it is taught how to handle it, should start at the beginning of the studies. Currently, teachers-to-be do not have enough courses realted to teaching.
Most people can recall previous horrible experience, for example shouting, punishing with a bad mark, humiliating in front of the whole class, or just not helping children in need. Everyone had at least one teacher, who could not control some situations, or ignored it. This case can be e. g. bullying verbally and physically which makes students mentally broken and makes damages on their self-assessment. In the future, these happenings will have several harmful effects. Asking any undergraduate will support that they were in the same boat at least once.
Currently, there is a huge amount of curriculum that children have to learn and teachers have to teach. Teachers do not have enough time to teach and explain it in details. Thus, pupils will not understand the educational program and just mug up a subject. Students will just gain lexical knowledge and will not be able to think on their own and will not create opinion. Education system expect pupils to use the teachers’ words and thoughts, because the strict syllabus does not offer children a chance to defend their point of view. Moreover, students get to hate those subjects in which they will not be successful. However, they might be talented but there is not enough time to clear it up. In addition, some syllabuses contain useless and boring knowledge.
The solution could be to change and shorten the curriculum in primary, secondary school and at university as well. Pick out the important, essential and necessary parts of the syllabus, and make those more interesting. The education system should emphasise exercise-oriented tasks instead of lexical knowledge. Also, at university there ought to be stress relieving courses.
